Star Trek: Online Beta Offer + Champions Online = Nerd Rage

For those of you who don't know about the upcoming Star Trek: Online MMO, go check it out at http://www.startrekonline.com/. The game takes place 30 years after the last Star Trek Next Generation Movie and has been in development for a few years now, last year it was acquired by Cryptic the same people who developed City of Heroes / Villains and the upcoming Champions Online MMO.

Now I've been a big fan of Cryptic's since I was a beta tester on City of Heroes and I'm really looking forward to Star Trek and eager to give Champions Online a try since it's based on the paper version of the game. A few days ago Cryptic decided to put on a very well meaning promotion where you could purchase a lifetime or a 6 month subscription to Champions Online and get a guaranteed spot in the closed beta of Star Trek: Online which is coming up later in the year. When I saw this I went looking for details right away as I had really wanted to play Champions until Star Trek came out. I saw this as something positive and hell, if you really wanted to get into Star Trek early it was only going to be $60.00 either way win-win right? If you say yes then you're not familiar with Nerd Rage and the ignorance that goes along with it.

The forums have been lit up by a handful of nut cases who have taken this offer personally and as a slap in the face. They are accusing Cryptic of being a big bad horrible company trying to prop up their shitty other game which no one is interested in ... and in Nerd Rage talk "No one is interested" means "I'm not interested in". Common sense has pretty much gone flying out the window and the Nerd Rage machine is being kept alive by about 5 to 10 flamers who have nothing better to do then piss and moan about this opportunity and how this has shaken their delicate little world. The way they are making it sound is as if they are back in grade school and Cryptic is the bully shoving them in a locker for a weekend sleepover. I feel bad for these guys, I really do, they are most likely still in moms basement waiting for their first glimpse of a real boob. They think everything revolves around just them and how could anyone ever be interested in another game. The best comments come from the ones crying about Champion users giving feedback about a game they don't even like.

These guys don't have a realistic perspective of Cryptic and the games they develop. They want the most feedback possible along with largest subscription base possible. They are doing this get a new group of fans, Champions Online ones, excited by providing them this offer at the same time inciting Star Trek: Online fans with the chance to try a new game and get a spot in the closed beta of the game which has given them perma wood for the last 12 months. Get over yourself and stop making yourselves look bad, you might be able to run your mouth stuck behind a keyboard but get up and go get some sun and a pizza pocket and calm down.
